2014 A Reset to My Fitness Goals

It was almost exactly one year ago that I started this personal blog to share my experiences along the way.  You can look back at the archives to see the details of that post.  But I had set some fairly lofty goals at the beginning of 2013 and as 2013 comes to a close I'm looking forward to setting new goals for 2014 to help continue down the path of self improvement.

10 Months In? Can't be Already Right?

Looking back at this blog, or even my technical blog I'm not 100% sure where the last 4 or so months have gone.  It seems like just yesterday that I was posting an update after finishing teaching the spring semester.  Now, I find that I'm already well into the fall semester of teaching and scarily the reality of an approaching Iowa winter is finally starting to settle in.  I've had a lot of requests for an update here on the blog and finally I'm getting around to providing the update.

Another Two Months? Really?

It is hard to believe that yet another two months have passed since the last time I posted an update here.  I've been getting a few questions via e-mail about how my progress is going so I thought it would be good for me to go ahead and post an update out here.  The last two months have been really busy, but I've been keeping up on things.  At this point I've hit a bit of a plateau though for the actual weight loss and been seeing more a muscle tone difference more than anything.

My First Mile: It Wasn't That Bad

Today I would say ended up being another milestone for me in my fitness journey.  And I have to say that I will say this due to two key events.  First of all I'm here in Orlando to speak at the Orlando Code Camp event tomorrow, at the Speaker Dinner tonight I ran into a few old friends that I haven't seen in about 6 or so months.  More than one of them commented that I looked different.  I've been noticing the differences with the less from the last 3 months or so, but being gradual it isn't as "obvious" to me as it is to them.  Then, to make things better, and as you can guess from the title of this post, the second is about my time at the gym tonight.

Fitness Journey Two Months In A Status Update

Yet again, time seems to just be flying by.  I cannot believe that my last post here was a month ago yesterday.  I'm not exactly sure where the month of February went, but it is done and gone!  February was a busy month with the Microsoft MVP summit and a few other things that have kept me out and about.

February 1st A Month Into The Journey

It is hard to believe that it is already one month into my fitness journey, it seems like just the other day that I was writing my first blog posting about this.  Now that I'm 1/12th of the way to the end of my journey, I have to say that overall I'm very impressed with what I've accomplished thus far.  I've had my share of successes, my failures and even a few surprises along the way in this past month.  I thought I'd just share a little bit about how things have gone over the past month, I'd love to hear stories from those of you that are also going through similar goals!

Fitness Metrics - Keeping Track and Keeping Focused

For those of you that know me well, you all know how I'm a numbers guy.  I like to see details, visible proof of things.  Blog metrics for example are something that I pay very close attention to.  As I've been starting this fitness journey in the last year-and-a-half I've been on the lookout on the way to transfer that same methodology to my fitness routine.  In this post, I'll look at why I value this so much, and also the tools that I use and why it is "tools" and not "tool".

My Journey to Weight Loss - An Ongoing Story

I have been going back and forth with myself for almost a year trying to decide if I should start blogging about my weight loss goals and experience.  Finally after seeing so many other people talking about their experience, including one presentation at an Ignite Session at the Day Of DotNetNuke conference earlier this year I have finally decided to start to blog a bit about my journey and experiences here.  If anything it will be a way for me to keep track of my progression, even better it could help someone else out that is trying to do the same thing.  Over the coming weeks I'll share some of the tools, processes, etc that have helped me along the way.  In this post however, I'll take a look at where I've come from and where I'm looking to go.

Mediterranean Cruise on Carnival Magic - The After Story!

For those of you that follow me on Twitter or Facebook I've been on a wonderful vacation since August 24th, when I left Des Moines and headed for Barcelona, Spain to catch the Carnival Magic for a 9 Day Cruise of the Mediterranean. In this post I'll share a bit about my experience on-board and at the ports.  This cruise is my 7th Carnival cruise in the past few years, and I have to say that this year was a bit of a unique experience between the ports of call and the crew/options available on the ship, all of which were very good things!  So without delay, here we go!

So I Missed My Plane Now What?

For those of you that follow me on twitter you have probably heard enough about my "stranded in ____ airport" or "Yet another plane delay in ____" type postings.  We have all been there, you did everything you can do and now you are stuck in some random airport and you don't have any way to actually get back home.  Now, I'm not sure how many times this has happened to me in the past 3-4 years, but I know it has been at least 10 times and in this post I'll show you some helpful tips that I've found over the years.  Keep in mind most of these comments are specific to Delta as they are the primary airline that I fly.

Planning Travel: Prepare for Issues

Over the last 18 months or so I have had the pleasure of traveling on a total of around 40 airplanes.  Why so many?  Well I do live in a location that requires a connecting flight to get almost anywhere, in fact my flight to Washington DC just a few weeks ago was the first flight that was direct in well over two years of traveling!  Given this, I have learned quite a few things around travel and how to prepare yourself to get to the destination.  In the end anyone traveling has one end goal; to get to the destination in one piece with all baggage intact.  To help make this possible I've come up with a few proven practices to help when it comes to planning for travel that can help prevent issues, or at minimum help delay the impact of issues.  In this posting I'll review some of these points.
