February 1st A Month Into The Journey

02 Feb

It is hard to believe that it is already one month into my fitness journey, it seems like just the other day that I was writing my first blog posting about this.  Now that I'm 1/12th of the way to the end of my journey, I have to say that overall I'm very impressed with what I've accomplished thus far.  I've had my share of successes, my failures and even a few surprises along the way in this past month.  I thought I'd just share a little bit about how things have gone over the past month, I'd love to hear stories from those of you that are also going through similar goals!

Successes By The Numbers

As I look back at overall activity by the numbers for the month of January things are looking good.  Out of 31 days in January I had 11 days that I made it to the gym for cardio, this makes an average of once every three days.  Not necessarily what I was shooting for, but far better than past experiences.  I've had had 10 days that I was able to get strength training in.  Sadly, I was down with the flu for a few days in mid-January that really threw me off of my game.

To continue this trend, since the Christmas holiday I've managed to drop 20 lbs, already 1/3 of the way to my goal.  The best part here is that I've been still loosing even without as much cardio as I wanted to get in.  This helps reinforce the fact that my eating habits have been improving.  The side benefit here is that I've already notice that I can go down one size in shirts, which is a welcomed change!

Areas for Improvement

Although I'm on track when looking at the numbers, this month I'm going to try to do my best to get back to that "consistent" point with my activities.  January started out strong, but then I had an almost 12 day period that I wasn't in the gym at all.  I have a little travel coming in February for the Microsoft MVP summit so I'm hoping to prove this month that I can stay on target even with travel being involved.  This will be my focus this month, increasing physical activity and keeping that level up.

Additional Goal

As I've been increasing my activity, trying to get more cardio in, I had a friend challenge me to run a 5K with her this summer.  I've never been a runner, but I thought that if I give myself until July I should be able to manage a 3.1 mile run.  So I've agreed to this and am working to try and incorporate more running into my workout rather than just elliptical activity.  In the end the change in activity will be good overall and I'm confident that I'll be ready come July!

I have to thank all of you that have been e-mailing me, commenting, and otherwise showing support.  As I mentioned above, feel free to share your stories below!
